Quick answer
Four things usually quietly break during BFCM: abandoned carts that never get a follow-up, saved products with no price-drop alert, ads that point to deleted pages (404s), and an order queue with no tags. Fix them with WhatsApp cart recovery, a wishlist with price-drop alerts, automatic 404 redirects and AI order tagging, ideally before the sale starts.
Why BFCM losses are easy to miss
Black Friday rarely breaks a Shopify store in a dramatic way: the site stays up, the sales come in, and money still leaks out through four small gaps that nobody notices until the weekend is over.
None of them triggers an error banner or a crashed checkout. A shopper leaves a cart behind and never hears from you again. A visitor saves a product for later and forgets it. An ad lands on a page that no longer exists. An order queue grows faster than your team can sort it.
The good news is that each gap has a simple fix, and there is still time to close all four before the rush. Below, we walk through each one, what to check in your store, and how to fix it. If you manage stores for clients, this works as a pre-launch checklist too.
1. The cart left at checkout, then forgotten
On Black Friday, shoppers compare tabs, get distracted and leave carts behind, and an abandoned cart that gets no follow-up is a sale handed to a competitor. Email recovery still works, but inboxes are at their most crowded that week, so your reminder competes with dozens of other promotions.
The fix: WhatsApp cart recovery. A short, personal message sent a couple of hours after the cart is left reaches shoppers where they already read messages. A typical flow looks like this: the shopper leaves, two hours later they get a message such as "Still thinking? Your cart's waiting. Grab it with 10% off before midnight!", and one tap on "Finish my order" takes them back to checkout. Messaging channels like WhatsApp are known for very high open rates, which is why they suit time-sensitive offers.
What to do this week:
- Turn on abandoned cart automation before the sale starts, not during it.
- Write one reminder with a clear deadline and one incentive you can afford at Black Friday margins.
- Test the full flow on your own phone, from cart to checkout.
Dondy: WhatsApp Marketing+Chat handles this on Shopify, with cart recovery messages and chat in one place.
2. The shopper who waited for the sale, then forgot
Many visitors who love a product will not buy it at full price. They save it, plan to come back when it goes on sale, and then life gets in the way. If your store gives them no way to save items and no reason to return, that intent disappears.
The fix: a wishlist with price-drop alerts. When a shopper hearts a product, you get their interest and, with consent, a way to reach them. When the price drops, an alert brings them back at exactly the moment they were waiting for, for example a "-20%" email on the item they saved.
What to do this week:
- Add a visible wishlist button to product pages and collection cards.
- Enable price-drop notifications so Black Friday discounts reach people who already showed interest.
- Make sure the alert email links straight to the product, not the homepage.
Hulk AI Wishlist & Favorites adds the wishlist and the price-drop alerts to your storefront.
3. The ad pointing to a page that no longer exists
Before Black Friday, stores clean up: old collections get deleted, products are archived, handles are renamed. Meanwhile, ads, influencer links, email campaigns and Google results still point to the old URLs. The shopper clicks a sponsored "Holiday Gifts" ad and lands on a 404 page, and you have paid for a visit that goes nowhere.
The fix: automatic 404 redirects. Instead of hunting for broken links by hand, track every 404 that visitors hit and redirect each one to the closest live page. That protects your ad spend and keeps the SEO value of old URLs.
What to do this week:
- Review the URLs used in your live and scheduled ads, emails and social posts.
- List any collection or product you deleted, archived or renamed this season.
- Set up 301 redirects from old URLs to the right replacement pages, and let 404 monitoring catch the rest.
SC Easy 404 AI Redirects lets you create redirects in bulk and fix 404s automatically on Shopify.
4. The order queue nobody can sort
When orders arrive in the hundreds, the problem is no longer getting them but finding the right ones. Support gets "Where's my order?" and "Did it ship yet?" messages all day, and without clear labels your team scrolls through a long list to find express shipping, gift orders, high-value carts or orders with notes.
The fix: AI order tagging. Tags applied automatically as orders come in let your team filter the queue in seconds: priority shipping, pre-orders, discount codes, risky orders, anything you define. Fulfillment and support work from the same sorted view instead of guessing.
What to do this week:
- Decide which five or six order types your team needs to separate during the sale.
- Set tagging rules for them before Black Friday and test them on a few real orders.
- Save Shopify order filters for each tag, so the team has one-click views on the day.
SC AI Order Taggers helps you tag orders automatically so the queue stays manageable.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Because nothing visibly breaks. The store works, so lost carts, dead links and slow order handling only show up later as missing revenue.
As early as possible, since each tool needs a test run. Even a few days before the sale is enough to cover the basics.
Yes. For anything beyond the standard setup, you can book a consultation for custom work.
The quiet ones: unrecovered carts, saved products nobody returns to, broken ad links and unsorted orders. Check all four before the sale begins.
