Most digital stores treat a download as the finish line. A customer buys one track, grabs one template, downloads one guide, and then they're gone. But digital content rarely lives on its own. The person who downloads a beat often wants the version with the stems. The buyer who picks up one template usually needs a couple more that go with it. Those connections are real. Until now, they've just been hard to see.

The new AI File Recommender in the Sky Pilot Digital Downloads app makes those connections visible, and turns them into more downloads and a smarter store.

What it does

The AI File Recommender looks at how your files are actually used and surfaces the ones that tend to go together. As customers download and buy your content, patterns start to show up. Certain files keep travelling in pairs or groups. The Recommender learns from that and, right on the download page, shows a short list of files that fit alongside the one a customer just picked up.

It's the "you might also like" moment people already expect from good online stores, now built into your digital downloads.

How it works

The engine leans on two things.

The first, and the strongest, is what your customers actually do. It looks at which files get downloaded together and which ones get bought in the same order or the same flow. When lots of the people who take File A also take File B, that's a real relationship, and the Recommender picks up on it.

The second is a simpler read on how similar files are to each other, based on file titles and, where they're available, the product titles too. It's a lighter signal that helps round out the connections.

Put together, those two signals produce a ranked list of related files for your store. The results are worked out ahead of time rather than in the moment, so they load fast, and everything stays inside your own store. Your data drives your recommendations, and nothing is ever shared between merchants.

What your customers see

When someone lands on a download page, they see a small, familiar section:

Customers who downloaded this also downloaded these files

Underneath it sits a clean set of three to five related files, each one linking straight to its product page. Nothing cluttered, nothing pushy, just a gentle nudge toward content they're likely to want. It follows the same pattern shoppers already know from everyday online stores, so it feels natural rather than bolted on.

There's also an option to keep that section from ever looking empty. If a file doesn't have strong data behind it yet, you can set your own default recommendations to fall back on, so customers always see something worth clicking.

What you get as a merchant

The Recommender isn't only a customer facing widget. It's also a way to understand how your catalog is really being used.

From your Sky Pilot dashboard, you can look at any file and see the other files most closely tied to it, how strong that connection is as a simple ranking, and how many customers those files share. That tells you which of your files naturally belong together, shows you patterns in how people move through your content, and points you toward cross selling opportunities you might not have spotted on your own. What you learn there can shape how you group and promote your files going forward.

Built to stay out of the way

The Recommender runs as its own separate service and connects to Sky Pilot through an API. That's on purpose. It keeps the recommendation side well apart from your core download flow, so if the service ever goes quiet, your customers' downloads carry on exactly as normal. It adds value when it's there and never gets in the way when it isn't.

What's next

The download page is the starting point, not the whole story. The same engine is meant to reach other places over time, like emails after a purchase, product pages, and the cart, so useful file discovery can happen wherever your customers are. One engine, several surfaces, the same simple experience throughout.

Turn your catalog into a discovery engine

Every file in your store has natural companions. The AI File Recommender finds them, shows them off, and turns the quiet moment after a download into the start of the next one. More downloads per visit, more engagement with your content, and a store that gets a little smarter the more it's used.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the AI File Recommender?

It is a feature built into the Sky Pilot Digital Downloads app that analyzes customer behavior to suggest relevant, complementary files directly on the download page, helping buyers discover more content.

How does the AI determine which files to recommend?

The recommendation engine uses two signals: customer behavior (files frequently downloaded or purchased together) and text relevance (matching file titles and product descriptions). Customer behavior acts as the primary, strongest signal.

Will recommendations load slowly or interrupt customer downloads?

No. Recommendation rankings are pre-calculated so they load instantly. Additionally, the feature runs via an isolated service through an API, ensuring core download functionality remains completely unaffected even if the recommender service experiences downtime.

What happens if a newly added file doesn't have download history yet?

You can configure default backup recommendations for your store. If a file lacks sufficient behavioral data, the system seamlessly displays your custom defaults so customers always see relevant suggestions.

Is store data shared with other merchants to train the AI?

No. Recommendations are calculated strictly using your own store's data. Nothing is ever shared or pooled across different merchant accounts.
