A premium product trapped in a generic store

BirdieBall makes really good gear. Their putting greens are patented, premium, the kind of thing serious golfers actually care about. The problem was never the product. It was the gap between what BirdieBall actually is and what it felt like to shop for it.

Their old site worked fine. But it looked like any other Shopify store, not like a brand with real technical pedigree. And underneath the design, the product configurator was doing its best with native Shopify tools. For a product line that asks customers to think about stimp speed, hole density, bumper options, and extras like the Strike Pad, "doing its best" wasn't going to cut it.

The brief was easy to say and harder to deliver. Make the storefront feel as good as the product. Make customizing one of these things feel like building a real thing, not filling out a form.

Making it actually feel like BirdieBall

We started with the storefront itself. Instead of dropping their content into a template and tweaking the colors, we rebuilt the theme from scratch off the approved Figma designs. Proper whitespace. Real photography. Tighter navigation. An architecture built mobile first.

The goal was simple. We wanted the site to feel like a boutique golf shop, not a generic product page. So the homepage, product pages, configurator, and cart all needed to feel like they belonged to the same brand, not pasted on top of someone else's theme.

The UI set the stage. Everything else we built had to live up to it.

Aiden, the digital caddy that meets customers at the door

Even with a beautiful site, BirdieBall still had a real problem. Their products are technical. Most people walking in already know they want a great putting green, but very few know what a "12 foot, 10 stimp" green actually means for their basement. So they freeze.

That's where Aiden came in. It's a guided selling assistant that meets customers right at the start of their journey. Conversational, friendly, no jargon. It asks a few simple things. Where are you practicing? How serious about your game are you? How much space do you have?

Then it points them at the right product before they ever land on a configurator. By the time they're picking options, they're already past "I have no idea what I need." That alone changes how a complicated catalog feels.

Hulk Product Options, the configuration engine doing the heavy lifting

Aiden gets people to the right product. But the right product still has a lot of choices behind it. So we used Hulk Product Options to handle the configuration logic itself.

This is the part of the build we're most proud of. Native Shopify product options weren't designed for products like BirdieBall's. Once you start stacking variables with dependencies (pick this length, and these hole densities become available; choose that surface, and the bumper options change), Shopify's default tooling runs out of room fast.

Hulk Product Options gave the team three things they couldn't get out of the box:

Conditional logic

Hides irrelevant options instead of overwhelming the customer.

Live visual layer

The build feels tangible while it's being assembled.

Structured backend data

Manufacturing receives a clean, unambiguous order.

"I can't recommend the Shop Circle team enough. They were able to customize a very complicated set of logic using their Hulk PO app. They turned this kind of product into a beautiful, easy to use, completely custom build your own tool on our website. We've had great success with the functionality and conversions tied to this custom product. Sometimes customizing products on the Shopify interface can be tricky, but their app made it possible for us to customize this product within the Shopify framework with a totally custom user interface. Very impressed with the whole team."

Environment, advisor, craftsman

None of them does it alone. Together, they turn what used to be a confusing shopping experience into something that actually feels good to use.

The Environment

Custom Theme

"This is a serious brand."

The Advisor

Aiden

"You don't need to be an expert to find the right product."

The Craftsman

Hulk Product Options

"You can customize every detail of your order without getting lost."

If you're selling configurable products, here's where it usually breaks

The BirdieBall build is specific to golf, but the pattern isn't. If you sell anything customizable, whether that's furniture, apparel, gear, equipment, or anything with options that depend on each other, the experience tends to break in three places.

1

The brand layer

Your site doesn't communicate the quality of your product. A custom theme fixes that.

2

The decision layer

Customers don't know what they need, so they leave before they configure. A guided selling tool fixes that.

3

The configuration layer

Customers reach the product page and hit a wall of options with no logic behind them. That's exactly what Hulk Product Options is for.

Want a build like this for your store?
